Where Jews differ today
What is shared: the historical liturgy of every community asked for Jerusalem and the Temple, the ninth of Av was kept as a day of mourning, and the Seder ended with Jerusalem. What differs today is how those words are prayed, changed or understood.
Orthodox and traditional
The traditional prayer book keeps explicit petitions for rebuilding Jerusalem, restoring the Temple service and, in Musaf, the offerings of the day.
Conservative / Masorti
Its prayer books keep the prayers for Jerusalem and Zion. In Musaf, the offerings are generally recalled as what our ancestors offered, rather than asked for again.
Reform
Since the nineteenth century, Reform liturgy has removed petitions to restore the sacrificial service. Many prayers for Jerusalem and Zion remain, often understood differently.
Reconstructionist
Its liturgy also removes or reinterprets the petitions for restoring sacrifice, while keeping Jerusalem's place in Jewish memory and peoplehood.
